Common n00b questions....
Just wanted to make an area to post some of the more common questions I get asked or see on the boards.. and the answers or info I provide. Please feel free to amend or add at anytime
Well, as each weapon you buy gets more powerful, you will find that you won't want to go back to most of your older weapons because they are much weaker...
The bases however don't have that much of a difference in power overall, but they each have attributes that help you depending on where your hunting and the tweaks you may want to do with your set-up.
For example...
~~Target base is used if the mice just aren't coming around your trap, this is accomplished with the 20% boost to accuracy.
~~Stone base offers more power, and a positive cheese effect, the positive cheese effect will help keep your cheese from going stale.
~~The Explosive base offers the most power, but negative cheese effect, so if you fail to attract a mouse you have a good chance of having stale cheese.
It's a good rule of thumb to upgrade your trap first... it will bring you more power which will enable you to catch the bigger mice, and you will make your gold faster:)
Only the bravest of hunters will dare a chance at the Harbour without the Swiss Army trap...lol
Best cheeses to use are Cheddar and Marble...
The cheaper the cheese the more gold you will make per mouse.
If you have the Target base, the accuracy boost will bring more mice and you can get away with using lower end cheese. I wouldn't start using Swiss cheese until your in the Harbour and preferably using the Swiss Army weapon:) Brie comes later...
One of the better methods to move up from Novice sooner is to try and sound the horn as often as you can, increasing the size of your hunting party will add more points each time you sound the horn. The kinds of mice, and size of the mice is a big factor as to how fast your bar will move... Typically at your level, when your choices are the Town, or the Meadow, I would stick with the town, here's why...
Mice can follow hunters from other areas.
Gnawnia, the town, is the main centre for almost all the transactions any hunter does, like buying cheese, using the Market...etc. (Apprentice level needed to use the Market)
So all us experienced hunters travel direct to Gnawnia a lot, with nice upper level mice in tow... so you can get some pretty good catches in town.
Depending on your weapon, I had great success using Marble, and Swiss when the mice aren't biting on the Marble.... It's a good idea to use lower end cheese whenever you can because that will maximize your profits. When you have the Swiss Army trap and beyond for weapons, Swiss becomes your lower end cheese usually...
Basically, yes. The attributes of the trap and the base get put together...
The Wood base offers the best cheese effect but the least amount of power, it is quickly outdated from the the other bases you buy, but hang on to it, cause you never know when you might want to try it with a more powerful trap that has a very negative cheese effect.
Stone base offers more power, and a positive cheese effect, the positive cheese effect will help keep your cheese from going stale.
The Explosive base offers the most power, but negative cheese effect, so if you fail to attract a mouse you have a good chance of having stale cheese.
No, there really isn't, at least not yet. There is going to be a release of MH 2.0 coming and with that there might be potions or some other ways, but for now, the traps and bases are the only way to affect those stats... Those stats are what you use to try and get the best trap/base combo for the area your hunting in, or maybe a certain mouse your trying to get... Luck is very important, it's the factor that will enable you to catch ANY mouse, prize mouse, huge Burglar mouse, Zombie.. etc.. even if your trap isn't strong enough to technically catch that mouse.... you get "Lucky"
Power is directly linked to the strength of the mice... More power=Bigger Mice.
- I have heard that I should save my bases but sell my traps because the bases will come in handy later. What's the logic behind this??

- Should I buy explosive base or save my money for the Swiss Trap?

Good idea
I have all my reference junk either on my HD or in my email.

Ounce for ounce the best cheese to use anywhere in the Gnawnia region and the Lab and Digby, is Swiss. You will get much more return on your cheese investment. Even when you are catching a lowly white in the Meadow, they are still worth more than the 100 gold you paid for a piece of Swiss. And in the end, Swiss out performs and will attract a better quality of mice than cheddar or marble. Brie is not needed until you reach the Lab, and then you only need to use it when you go 3 or 4 hunts/trapchecks without a catch using Swiss, use Brie for an hour or so, then switch back to Swiss.

Regarding leveling up...points have absolutely nothing to do with it. It is simply the number of mice and the quality of mice you catch, coupled with the amount of time you spend on MouseHunt. The more time you spend on MouseHunt, the more hunts you go on, the more mice you catch, the more your percentage will increase.
As for selling old traps/weapons...I advise everyone to never sell them back. First, you get a very poor return rate, second, I've been a gamer for a verrrrrry long time, since the Telenet and Compuserv days,
and typically the twist is you'll always need to use something that you acquired early on, at a later stage of the game. I'll give you an example...why do you think cheddar is the only cheese available in Digby? Because more than likely, that low level cheese will actually have a purpose, but who knows when.

I would totally agree with that statement, I myself use Swiss 95% of the time... but for a novice with a lower end trap, I really found that when you cut your costs in half, by using at least marble, then that 100gold white is actually making you your cheese cost with a buck or two profit, instead of just breaking even... and most n00bs will have the Target base... I actually hunted a lot of today in Digby using FF/Target/Marble and made 40,000 by 5pm....

Now I knew the mice played a roll... but I was trying to think of how I was getting ahead so fast in the game... I have made some good friends playing this app and a lot of them play pretty often as well... I finally thought of the points I get for every horn blow... well I had around 300 ppl on my list in my hunting party and was getting 250 pts pretty consistently, after asking them all, most of them were only getting 25-75 pts for sounding the horn... so I guess I made an assumption on that having something to do with it.
As for the trap thing, yeah, I could see that

Re: Common n00b questions....
When I started playing, I bought each trap and base and used each cheese as bait and actually tracked the results for each. This was at the novice level, I then coroborated my findings when my son created Hunter Helper, I wanted a comparison to my original tests.
You have to factor in the number of higher level mice that you will actually attract by using Swiss and then calculate your gross profit % versus the same trap configuration using marble and cheddar and Swiss always comes out ahead.
The reason I'm at the computer so often and at such odd hours, is that what I did above, is what I do for companies, figure out what is most profitable for them and the best course of action for them to take to achieve wealth and growth...I figured what the hell might as well see where the gold is and applied it to MH!
I know...get a life right?! But why not, I'm on the computer all the time anyway.
For rank, the algorithm is based solely on mice.
For points, the more in your party, the more you'll get when you sound the horn.

Re: Common n00b questions....
Ok... it makes a lot of sense that way, in terms of points and levelling up... I guess I just play a LOT..
I think it's great that you took all the info down and found out. I am at the computer all the time too, I could hardly tell you to get a life...
That's really good info to have, now I know I'll be passing on the best possible advice.
Thanks again
